Chris Hemsworth has gone from Marvel superhero to action blockbuster hero in Netflix’s new tension-filled movie Extraction, giving the likes of John Wick and Jason Bourne a run for their money.
The Thor actor quite literally brings out the big guns as Tyler Rake, a mercenary who accepts a deadly mission to extract the kidnapped son of an international crime lord and rest assured, it provides plenty of WTF moments.
Set mostly in Bangladesh, it transports our beloved Norse God worlds away from the Marvel universe he’s become so accustomed to and which fans are so used to seeing him in.

While the movie has received mixed reviews, those who loved it have called for a sequel and it doesn’t sound like it’s too much of a stretch.
Exploring the possibility of a follow-up, director Sam Hargrave told Digital Spy: ‘We’re all going to wait to see how fans react to the film. And based on that, there have been discussions of different storylines that could take place in different times – both forward in time and backwards in time.
‘We’re just waiting to see what happens, and to see how the appetite is for these characters and for this film. And then we’ll make our decision. But there definitely have been discussions of broadening this world, for sure.’
So an Extraction universe, perhaps? How ever will Thor have the time?
It’s certainly one of Netflix’s action-packed movies in a while and there were so many moments that left us yelling: ‘Did that just happen?!’
*** AGAIN, SPOILERS AHEAD ***
When Chris aka Tyler Rake jumped off the cliff
We knew Chris was pretty fearless but, wowza! Before he embarks on the mission, Rake stops drinking his beer, casually runs straight for the cliff edge and jumps over without a moment’s hesitation.
He’s next seen sitting Buddha-style underwater as though he landed perfectly in that position and, honestly, our minds are blown.
Director Hargrave has revealed exactly how the scene was executed – with camera trickery and a stunt double – but we’re going with our imagination on this one.
All the kills….
From boys getting thrown off roofs to Rake shoving a man’s head into spikes, it was… a lot.
That 12-minute continuous fight scene
You might not have noticed while gripped in all the action but yes, that epic fight scene in the middle of Extraction lasted 12 minutes. Even more impressively, it was filmed in one single take.
Hargave told IndieWire of the bold move: ‘The action scene on the page was exciting and amazing, but budgetarily and time-wise, it was one of the things I didn’t know if we had the time to execute it as big as it was on the page.
‘How do I keep this in our world? How do I make it my own, so it’s not just another version of a car chase in [a Jason] Bourne [movie] or [a James] Bond [movie]? On our time and our budget, we weren’t going to out-Bourne Bourne. So how do we do that?.’
However they did it, it was worth the punt.
David Harbour’s betrayal
In the words of Tyra Banks, we were all rooting for you, David!
Fans of hit Netflix series Stranger Things were no doubt pumped to see Hopper make an appearance in the blockbuster but that soon changed when he betrayed Rake.
His character Gaspar tried to persuade his former squad mate to kill the kidnapped boy, Ovi, in exchange for $10 million. But of course, Rake wasn’t about to betray his own mission so Gaspar had to go.
Did Tyler Rake die?
After all that fight, Rake got so far to the end and successfully extracted Ovi only to be shot in the neck for his troubles.
And we were heartbroken.
But was Rake that mysterious figure looming over Ovi at the swimming pool? Did he survive? Will there be a sequel?
Hopefully, if Netflix wants to hold onto their money-making action hero.
